A Prayer for America
As we celebrate our 250th anniversary, I offer this prayer of gratitude to begin our weekend celebrations.
Gracious and Almighty God,
Every good and perfect gift comes from You. Today we pause to give You thanks for the blessings You have poured out upon this nation. Thank You for the freedoms we enjoy, for the opportunity to worship without fear, to speak openly, to serve our neighbors, and to participate in the work of our communities. We recognize that these are not entitlements we have earned but gifts of Your common grace.
Forgive us when our love for our country becomes greater than our love for Your Kingdom. Keep us from confusing patriotism with discipleship or national identity with our identity in Christ. Remind us that before we are citizens of any nation, we are citizens of Your Kingdom, and our highest allegiance belongs to Jesus Christ alone.
We also confess that our nation has not always reflected Your justice or Your mercy. We acknowledge the ways we have failed to love our neighbors, to pursue righteousness, to protect the vulnerable, and to seek peace. Have mercy on us. Grant us humble hearts that are willing to repent where we have sinned and courage to pursue what is good, true, and just.
We pray for those who lead our nation. Give them wisdom beyond their own understanding, integrity that resists corruption, compassion for those who suffer, and a deep commitment to justice. We pray not only for leaders with whom we agree but for all who bear the weight of governing. Teach us to honor them, to pray for them, and to seek the good of our communities.
Make Your Church a faithful witness in this land. May we be known more for our love than our politics, more for our service than our arguments, and more for our hope in Christ than our confidence in earthly power. Help us to love our country well by loving our neighbors well, welcoming the stranger, caring for those in need, and proclaiming the good news of Jesus.
Thank You for America, with all of its blessings and all of its imperfections. May we receive its gifts with gratitude, confront its failures with humility, and labor for its flourishing with hope. But above all, fix our eyes on the City whose builder and maker is You, the Kingdom that cannot be shaken, and the King who reigns forever.
We pray all of this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
