Invest Where It Lasts

By Dean Collins

Wouldn’t be great to have a place to invest your money that works well and grows no matter what is going on in the local or world economy and never fails? And what if your investment was guaranteed to be 100% secured? Wouldn’t we all choose to put our money there? And what if the owner of the fund told you that it gets even better by promising that you could have even more? Well, I have good news for you. It is not only true, but it also comes with a worry-free plan!

In Luke 12, Jesus made this very offer. After delivering the parable about a rich man whose economic growth was so significant that he had to create more places to put his wealth, Jesus ended his parable by telling the rich young man that his soul would be required of him that very night. And he finished the parable this way:

“This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Jesus turned to his disciples and told them why they didn’t need to be anxious, especially about the things money can buy, and he listed the reasons:

- Life if more than the consumption of food.

- The body is more valuable than the clothes you buy and wear.

- The birds don’t worry about their next meal because God provides for them.

- The flowers don’t fret or work themselves to death; God just makes them grow into their beautiful state.

- And most importantly, as creator of all things, including us, God wants to give you everything you need because he knows our needs.

All Jesus asks is that we seek him and his kingdom instead of focusing on all of the things we need and want in this world. And Jesus knows our tendency to try and do both, but he stayed firm on our priority. We must choose to seek him and demonstrate our commitment by freeing ourselves from the pursuit of wealth and comfort here and now.

Father, your words are filled with hope and comfort. Your promise to provide for us is overwhelming to consider. Yet, we struggle to let go of our stuff. Forgive us. We ask that your Holy Spirit show us how and where we can give our time, our talents, and our treasures, that your kingdom would spread today and free us from our worry. In Jesus’ name, amen.
