Mic Drop Moment

You have probably seen someone on TV or at an event who had some great performance and then either literally “dropped the mic” or acted like they were dropping the microphone. Usually this happens when someone believes they have just nailed their speech, song, or performance.

When I read Romans 8:31-39 this morning, I thought this might be a “drop the mic” sort of moment inspired by the Holy Spirit! The apostle Paul opens this paragraph with this question: “What then shall we say to these things?” What things? Well, the powerful truth that Paul recorded in the first 30 verses of Romans 8 is a good starting point.

“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (v. 1)

“For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” (v. 2)

“If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” (v. 11)

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (v. 14)

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (v. 18)

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (v. 26)

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (v. 28)

Paul shared so many more powerful truths in this chapter and in the first eight chapters of Romans that we don’t have time to cover here. Then he asked the question: “What shall we say to these things?” And then the “drop the mic” answer:

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” Paul expanded that God did not spare his own son but gave him up on the cross for our sins! And if God would go that far to express his love for us, then he will certainly never abandon us or leave us alone in our suffering. He will be with us and carry us through, whatever situation, illness, or difficulty, and carry us all the way to eternity. Nothing can separate us from the love of God!

I don’t know about you, but sometimes, and especially in the last several months, I have needed this reminder. Jesus told us that life would have many troubles. All of scripture reminds us that life on this side of eternity is difficult, but the good news of Jesus is that because of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, we will stand in the end. Whatever challenge you may be facing today will not remain forever. God will not allow it. The finished work on the cross guarantees as much.

Father, as we begin this day, we trust in your promises. We are grateful that your Holy Spirit led Paul to record this powerful message for us. We declare before you now that we know that if you are for us, then nothing can stand against us! Thank you! Fill our hearts and minds today and every day with the knowledge that nothing can ever separate us from your amazing love. In Jesus’ name, amen!
