Ready in Every Season

For 20 years, I watched athletes returning for fall sports camps ahead of their season. Coaches always tell their student athletes to continue their training and conditioning in the off season, but coaches know that too often the returning athletes are not as disciplined in the off season as they want them to be.

In 2 Timothy 4, Paul teaches us that we are to be ready to share the good news of Jesus in season and out of season. Unfortunately, too many Christ followers think that ministry follows a school calendar where there are vacation days, holidays, and summers off. The Bible certainly teaches us the importance of “sabbath rest,” but it also tells us to remember that our representation of Christ, and the sharing of his gospel with the world, has no holiday.

Paul continued by telling us that as we share the gospel, we reprove, rebuke, and exhort. Sadly, many Christians want to take this as permission to point the finger at others and their mistakes. But Paul added this to the actions referenced above: “with complete patience and teaching.” When we consider the qualification, it is clear that we must be wise and loving in how we teach and correct ungodly behavior in others.

As referenced earlier in 2 Timothy, Paul one final time explained that in these last days there will be resistance to sound teaching and a preference to simply “suit yourself” when it comes to what Christian teachings you prefer and which ones you will simply ignore.

Secular culture has always and will always be permissive about what an individual chooses to do. And this comes due to our persistent wandering from the truth as we follow every new idea or myth that is presented in a shiny wrapper.

As Paul nears his death, he describes the peace he has about sharing the gospel, even when it came with suffering and persecution. His final words are a wonderful goal for all of us to strive toward in our service to the Lord:

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

Father, we receive this charge from Paul to share the gospel in word and by our actions. Holy Spirit, grant us wisdom and patience as we teach others. Jesus, may your love be seen and heard in us. Help us to run our race and finish our race with gratitude, love, and diligence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
