They were more concerned with the physical than the spiritual. It seems to me that we, like those in the wilderness of exodus or the lakeside of this Gospel account, tend to focus on the physical and not the spiritual and eternal.

I don’t think God wants us to ignore thinking and planning and making estimates and building budgets. But I am confident that if all our strategy can reliably guarantee every outcome and reasonably assure the source for every dollar, then our faith may be in ourselves and not in our God. Self-reliance and complete certainty about what’s ahead don’t require faith.

Too often I’ve silently jumped to the defensive when confronted with the subject of white privilege. But no one is asking me to defend my status. It doesn’t diminish me or my talent or my hard work. But it does enhance them.
