February 21
If our heart has been transformed and the love of Christ is in us, then we do good and speak goodness. If we are consistently name-calling, lying, spreading rumors, lashing out at others for their opinions and life choices, then it would appear the heart transformation has yet to have occurred. No amount of church-going will cover up an unchanged heart.

The enemy of God will always interrupt the things of God. Yet we know he does not have the final word. And as Moses and Peter discovered, God is present. “I am” is waiting to meet us in the danger. From our perspective the situation seems hopeless, but in the thin space anything is possible and everything can turn into a moment of worship where we realize God is much more than we are and that he alone is worthy.

Before I became a Christian I was someone who kept a lot of things moving, made decisions, and focused on achievement. Now as a follower of Jesus, I am still wired that way. But now wisdom from God and the Holy Spirit keep me in check when my wiring pushes against the fruit of the Spirit. Gentleness, love, patience, kindness, and so on must still be my behavior, even as I am driven to get my job done.

Like you sometimes I question whether God will listen again and deliver me from trouble one more time. Can we count or even remember all the times he has delivered us before? We don’t get to choose how God rescues or when, but we have our testimonies that show he has and he will again.

To be great according to the ways of Jesus requires that we become more like the children in our lives who are kind and humble and willing to learn.

Peace is a beautiful concept to put on a bookmark or wall hanging or Christmas card. But making peace is work. Can we step beyond the norms of our society to do that work? Isn’t this the church’s job? Isn’t this the calling of the seventh Beatitude?
