Sunday review: November 1-6, 2021

We received an email this week from a government representative telling us how that day’s post gave him courage to keep doing the right thing. Maybe you’ll find courage—and share some!—as you look again at this week’s posts.

November 1
Since God’s wisdom trumps the enemies’ strategies, we will often see our enemies fail. When that happens the wise king tells us how to respond. We are not to gloat when our opposition loses. We are also not to be anxious in their presence or desire their cool stuff. Our enemies will often have a collection of the world’s material offerings. But as we see their treasure, we must keep in mind that those things don’t actually last. The enemies, their strategies, their interruptions, and their stockpiles all will be destroyed.

November 2
So we have choices to make. We can be hypocrites; we can speak and look like God’s people but simply do it as a show for some friends. That kind of leaven produces a rotting effect on more and more people, turning them off. And in this case, we have no light because the darkness grows and grows. Or we can accept the life-changing gift of Jesus. If we do, our words and deeds become leaven or yeast that has an expanding impact. Lots of people are blessed by the God in us that produces good works. And as our behavior and belief line up consistently, our light shines brighter and brighter until the full day when Jesus returns.

I can God to open my eyes to see all the people around me. I can ask the Holy Spirit to open my heart to be more caring and attentive to others. And I can have the humility to repent when I have excluded others from the welcoming arms of Jesus. It might not have been intentional, but it has happened.

Does my life show any evidence that I love Jesus more than my family? Have we forgotten that he actually said it should? And what about our resources, our jobs, and our retirement plans? Does Jesus really require that we give thought to whether our choice to follow him might mean we take a minute or longer to assess our priorities?

I remember what my life has been like because the Lord is on my side. . . . If God has such a spectacular and reliable track record, then why would I not trust him with tomorrow?

November 6
Humility may seem radical to the secular world, but it’s the expected mindset for followers of Christ. We rejoice when we discover humility among believers. But we shudder when we see the opposite.
