Friends, beware of trusting your preferred political party to provide what you need. Beware of believing that either Democrats or Republicans can save us or are worthy of our full support.

We cannot legislate love or grace. We cannot elect kindness or mercy. These attributes come from a life that has been crucified and lives again by the power of God.

Don’t panic when things look bleak. Don’t worry when you want to pray and ask for help but you can’t even find the words or the energy to speak. In those moments the Holy Spirit is already actively engaging God on your behalf. Jesus indicated that in this life we will have many troubles but that he has already been victorious over all of them on our behalf.

Take a moment to be thankful. Better yet, establish a rhythm of gratitude for the goodness of God and the people of God. A habit of gratitude will extend your days and fill you with joy.

The situation may be bad, but the love of God was present before the situation, in the situation, and will be present past the situation. Nothing and no one can change the permanent love of God.

How I develop as a Christian, how I engage the world around me with the love of Jesus, how I contribute to the prospering of my community for God’s sake—any of that may be helped by some initiative sponsored by my local church. All of it, however, is ultimately my responsibility to pursue. And sometimes church-inspired busyness allows me to substitute good things for godly growth.
