We must make a choice to surrender ourselves to the mind of Christ and be renewed by his Spirit, or else we will reach for the old and familiar ways of living.

God cares most about the qualities reflected by the prophet’s instruction in Micah 6:8: “do justice, . . love kindness, and . . . walk humbly with your God.” His favor flows to those who are formed by his Spirit, reflecting the indwelling Christ alive within us.

If we want to have real Kingdom impact, we must be willing to sacrifice for others, even when we don’t know them. And even if we’ve heard they are struggling in sin. To go the extra mile and care for those we don’t know is truly life-giving and life-changing. It’s the kind of work Paul did because of the kind of love Jesus had for him and for all of us.

Praying for wisdom and for our words to be clear and kind will go a long way in developing relationships that will open doors for the gospel to advance and lives to be transformed.

Whatever situation you find yourself in today, Psalm 107 can help you, too. God hears you when you pray. He will respond by his Spirit and through others around you. Look for both. And when you see God’s hand, make sure you let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Let God hear your prayers of thanksgiving. I bet you will prompt the rest of us to join you in gratitude.

I’m learning that what matters most to me is knowing that God is with me and responding to my circumstances in a way that may point others to him. If I insist that bad things are OK—I’ve got it under control!—I’m bringing attention to myself instead of him. If I become hopeless in the face of trouble, I undermine the faith of those who watch me crumble.
