When the Impossible Becomes Possible with God

How many times have you faced what you believed to be impossible? Sometimes things look or feel impossible because they are hard. Losing that last 10 pounds probably isn’t impossible, but it may take longer than planned and you might have to work harder than you imagined. However, sometimes there are situations and problems that, from a human perspective, do in fact look impossible.

You likely read Luke chapters one and two when you celebrated Christmas last year. When the angel visits Mary and tells her that she will be the vessel of God’s son Jesus, she responded to the news by asking the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” Mary was clearly thinking that giving birth to the Son of God seemed impossible. The angel responded, “For nothing will be impossible with God.” Mary then responded with a heart of obedience and humility: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Throughout scripture we learn that there is great power, divine power, at work when God speaks:

“For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.” (Psalm 33:9)

“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11)

“And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Genesis 1:2-3)

God’s power and plans are released when we align ourselves with his word. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave his disciples and us words that we can pray that will align ourselves, our hearts, and our minds with his: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” This prayer conveys to God that we want his will to be accomplished in us and in the situations we face. We want God’s will even in our impossible-looking situations. Sometimes the impossible may simply mean that God will give us strength to endure. Other times the impossible may mean that God moves a situation or another person to move the mountain in front of us. But like Mary, our best answer to God in every situation is, “Let it be to me according to your word.”

Father, give us the faith to trust your plans for us in every situation. We release our plans and our will to you. Speak your word over us, that we might know your perfect peace. In Jesus name, amen.
