Wonderfully Made by the Master

When you are walking through the mountains, along the seashore, or simply looking at a tree-lined sunset, are you overwhelmed by the gift God has given us? Sometimes when looking at God’s creation I am filled with wonder, majesty, and joy. And often, gratitude wells up in my mind and I cannot help but offer a spontaneous prayer of thanksgiving.

Looking at art often brings moments of contemplation, pleasure, and peace. The creativity that some people demonstrate through their craft inspires us as well. Listening to the sounds of nature or some song can bring the same responses and many more. In Psalm 139, David found himself overwhelmed not by looking upward or outward but by considering our internal design.

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb…I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

When was the last time you took a moment to consider how unique, special, and wonderful you are?! The same God who created the beauty of nature also used his knowledge, power, and artistic brilliance to create you and me. And each of us is truly one of a kind. God knew us before our parents knew us, and he knows us better than anyone else knows us. And he knows us better than we know ourselves.

Sometimes we have a tendency to compare ourselves, our gifts, and accomplishments to others. And often this process results in thinking we are less than another. I can’t remember where I read it years ago, but some psychologists said, “Comparison is the root of all feelings of inferiority.” But consider this passage from David. In verses13-16, we discover not only that we were formed and knitted together by God and that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We also learn that God made us wonderful.

The apostle Paul said something similar: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” The master designer of heaven and earth also handcrafted each of us as being both unique and special but also as ones who bear his very likeness.

Note that Paul also tells us that we were created for a purpose. We are to do the works of God. Our daily walk is to be filled with the actions that we have both seen and experienced from Jesus himself.

Enjoy the inspiration of nature today. Find peace and joy in looking at someone’s painting or sculpture or by listening to a beautiful or energetic song. But don’t forget to take a minute to consider that God created you as his special agent to touch the lives of those around you and therefore reveal himself to the world through your actions and words!

Father ,we are in awe as we consider that you, the God of creation, formed us both uniquely and in your image. We are overwhelmed by the transformation you bring to our lives as we surrender ourselves daily to your will and your purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
