You May Not Finish It—But God Will
Have you ever been asked or appointed to do something and then circumstances change and opposition comes from one direction, and then another, and the project comes to a halt? I know some of you probably think, “Well, if my boss would leave me alone and fund the project, I could get it done!” And you probably could, but sometimes there are things happening above even your boss’ pay grade that bring setbacks, interruptions, and stops to important work.
As the Babylonian and Persian exile chapter of God's children was wrapping up, there was a clear direction about rebuilding the temple from the king, and things were rocking along until some "nonlocals" got their feelings hurt and wrote the new king a letter and got the project stopped! How in the world does someone have that kind of power to stop God's children from doing what God called them to do? But they did, and the rebuild of the temple came to a stop. But then a couple of God's prophets spoke into the situation and got the project restarted. But the opposition came again and ran right up the food chain, making more noise, and this time the next king went back to the original plan and allowed the project to be finished.
God's work will get finished. We may have setbacks and stops. We may have funding issues. We may or may not be the ones to finish the job. Our project may change course. God may pick a different path or method. But God's work will get finished and at the right time. This paragraph is easy to write and very hard to accept. You and I both know, or think we know, the best way and best time to do God's important work, but we don't get to make that choice. Our choice is whether we will be faithful amid whatever difficult thing we find ourselves in and trust God to do his work, whether we understand it or not.
Faithfulness takes wisdom, clarity, and courage, and the good news is God will supply all three. And as a bonus, he will provide peace, rest, and resources for the journey.
Father, help us grow in the truth that you are always working your plan, and no matter how many setbacks or interruptions we experience, we know that you are never surprised. Increase our faith when we become weary so that we may know that you will always be enough and provide enough for our journey. In Jesus’ name, amen.
