But I Am Just Getting Started!

As I was going through my morning routine of reading scripture and prayer, this verse popped up in my prayer journal. To be completely honest I gave a sigh and for a moment felt frustrated. After all this is the beginning of the new year. I was feeling optimistic about all the new possibilities in the year. And like most of you, I don’t like to or want to wait!

But as I read and reread this verse, I realized the importance of this word from the psalmist. None of us like it when we have made plans with someone and then they fail to show up at the appointed time. And the longer we wait, the more frustrated we become.

But when we are waiting for the Lord, it is helpful to remember that we are waiting on the one who is the creator of all things, the source of all wisdom, and who expressed his love for us by sending Jesus, who not only took our sins to the cross but also rose again, giving us victory over death. Waiting on God is different than anyone or anything else we might wait for!

I also read the first three chapters of Genesis this morning. How might things have been different if Adam and Eve had waited on the Lord! They had everything they needed. They had their creator interacting with them on strolls through the garden. All they had to do was enjoy their creator and continue to discover the fulness of creation.

You know the story of the crafty serpent and his conversation with Eve. How might things have been different if Eve had waited for one more conversation with God before she gave into the temptation? But Eve, like you and I, had trouble with waiting. Time and time again we jump to conclusions. We are sure that we can figure things out on our own without any pause to consider a prayer or to wait on how the Holy Spirit might guide us to the right conclusion.

The scriptures confirm that when we wait on the Lord, our strength and our courage grow. Maybe in this new year we can learn to pause before we act, say a prayer, and see what God wants us to do. Sometimes he will prompt quick actions and sometimes he will slow us down so that a better plan, a better path, and a better outcome might be realized.

Father, thank you for the truth of scripture that protects and guides us. Today we ask that your Holy Spirit prompt us when to act and when to wait. In Jesus’ name, amen.
