As I read the Psalms over and over, I notice themes. I am sure you do as well. Central to the Psalms is that God is majestic! He is the powerful creator and sustainer of the earth and everything in it. He is the mighty King! 

When we read about kings and watch movies where kings are depicted on screen, they are often mighty warriors, and the Psalms tell us he King is as well. Books and movies sometimes depict kings as relentless, powerful and lovers of power. Kings of this world become consumed by their power and often turn into tyrants who are filled with self-love and self-gratification. But the King of Kings and Lord of Lords presented in the Psalms departs from that mold.

Our King, while all powerful, is a king who desires a relationship with his subjects. Over and over, the psalmist speaks to the King in prayer, crying out for help. The reason is simple. Our King listens and responds. His interest is in us! His love is for us!

Because of our King's overwhelming love, he also instructs us and warns us in the pages of scripture. One such warning is to be aware that we are not above temptation. Paul tells us in Corinthians that just when we notice we are doing well, standing tall and proud, that we need to take heed lest we fall. Our confidence in ourselves and in our successes, small and large, create a vulnerable situation that can lead to failure and destruction.

But our King is ready to help us in our most vulnerable moments and will always provide us with a path of escape! What a gift! What a Savior! What a King!

Take a moment to thank him, call out to him, and praise him today.

Pastor, campus minister, counselor, corporate employee, Fortune 500 consultant, college president—Dean brings a wide range of experiences and perspectives to his daily walk with God’s Word. 

In 1979 he founded Auburn Christian Fellowship, a nondenominational campus ministry that still thrives today. In 1989 he founded and became executive director for New Directions Counseling Center, a service that grew to include several locations and counselors. In 1996 he became vice president of human resources for the CheckFree Corporation (3,000 employees) till founding DC Consulting in 1999. He continues part-time service with that company, offering executive leadership coaching, organizational effectiveness advice, and help with optimizing business relationships.

His latest pursuit, president of Point University since 2006 (interim president 2006-2009), has seen the college grow in enrollment, curriculum, physical campus, and athletic offerings. He led the school’s 2012 name change and relocation from Atlanta Christian College, East Point, Georgia, to Point University in West Point, Georgia. Meanwhile, he serves as board member or active volunteer with several nonprofits addressing issues ranging from global immunization to local government and education. 

He lives in Lanett, Alabama, with his wife, Penny. He has four children (two married) and five grandchildren. He plays the guitar, likes to cook, and enjoys getting outdoors, often on a nearby golf course.
